You’re under a sink, up a ladder or driving between jobs, and the phone rings. If you don’t pick up, a lot of those callers will simply ring the next business on the list. The fix isn’t to answer more calls yourself. It’s to make sure a call you can’t take still ends with a name, a number and a booked job.
This article covers what to set up: the short answer first, then free fixes, then what to pay for depending on how many calls you miss. Every price links to the page we read it from on 8 October 2026.
The short answer
Most small trade businesses need two layers. First, something that catches every missed call, at least with a text back. Second, something that answers when you can’t, whether that’s AI or a person. If you already run your business on Jobber, use its built-in receptionist before adding another app.
- 01
Text back every caller you miss
A business number on your mobile that automatically texts anyone whose call goes unanswered, in or out of hours. It connects to Jobber, and to Housecall Pro on the MAX or XL plans.
- 02
Answer when you can’t
AI answers overflow or after-hours calls, texts you a summary, and books into Google Calendar, Outlook or Calendly. Starter covers 30 calls. Spam and calls under 15 seconds aren’t billed.
- 03
Already on Jobber?
Jobber’s own AI Receptionist answers calls and texts and books straight into your Jobber calendar. The add-on includes 30 conversations, then $0.79 each. It’s included free on the Plus plan.
- 04
A real person for big-ticket calls
US-based receptionists answer 24/7, take messages and can book appointments. Worth it when one job is worth a lot and callers expect a human.
- 01
Answer when you can’t
An AI receptionist aimed at UK trades. It books into Google Calendar and texts confirmations. £69 a month covers 40 calls, then £1.75 a call, with a 14-day trial.
Or: Reception Genie
- 02
Already on Jobber?
Jobber’s AI Receptionist works with UK numbers too. Check the UK price on Jobber’s pricing page, since the figure we read was in US dollars.
- 03
A real person answering
Real people answering 24/7, with appointment booking on every plan. £45 a month covers 25 minutes. Busier plans start at £205 for 150 minutes.
Or: Moneypenny
- 04
A team with an office phone
A full business phone system with UK numbers and porting. It needs at least 3 licences, and each plan includes 50 minutes a month of its AI voice agent.
Before you pay: what your phone already does
Your phone has free features that help you decide which calls to step away for. They won’t book a job or answer a question, but they stop you missing the important ones.
- iPhone: Live Voicemail. Shows a live transcript while someone leaves a message, and you can pick up partway through. In iOS 26, Screen Unknown Callers → Ask Reason for Calling asks unknown numbers why they’re calling before your phone rings. Both work in US and UK English.
- Google Pixel: Call Screen and Take a Message. Call Screen asks callers who they are and shows you the answer. Take a Message picks up calls you miss and saves a transcript. Automatic screening works in the US and UK.
The catch is that many callers won’t leave a message at all. The figure usually quoted comes from a 2016 Moneypenny survey, which said 69% of callers who reached voicemail didn’t leave one. That comes from a company that sells call answering, so treat it as a rough guide. Either way, a voicemail box on its own doesn’t catch them.
Pick by how many calls you miss
Count your missed calls in a normal week from your phone’s call log, then multiply by four. These are the cheapest sensible options at each level, using prices checked on 8 October 2026:
| Missed calls a month | United States | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|
| About 10 | Free phone features, plus Quo’s missed-call text-back ($19 per user) | Free phone features, plus Reception Genie Basic (£8.99, about 20 minutes) |
| About 30–40 | Upfirst Starter ($24.95 for 30 calls), or Quo’s Sona AI ($25 for 40 calls, on top of a Quo plan) | Supportive AI Starter (£69 for 40 calls) |
| About 75–100 | Upfirst Premium ($59.95 for 90 calls), Sona ($49 for 100 calls) or Smith.ai AI ($150 for 75 calls) | Supportive AI Standard (£119 for 150 calls) |
| You want a human | Ruby ($250 for 50 minutes) or Smith.ai ($300 for 30 calls) | AnswerConnect UK (£45 for 25 minutes, or £205 for 150) |
Plan details come from each vendor’s pricing page: Quo, Sona, Upfirst, Smith.ai AI, Ruby, Supportive AI, Reception Genie and AnswerConnect UK. Most add VAT or sales tax on top.
Keep your number: forwarding vs porting
You don’t need a new number. There are two ways to keep yours:
- Conditional call forwarding. Your mobile rings first, and if you don’t answer, the call moves to the answering service. It’s the quickest way to start and easy to undo. On Verizon, *71 followed by the number forwards only calls you don’t answer. On Vodafone UK, **61*number# diverts unanswered calls, and you can set how long it rings first. Upfirst’s setup guide suggests ringing for 15–20 seconds before forwarding. Forwarded calls may use your plan’s minutes.
- Porting. You move the number to the new provider. It’s neater long term, but it takes time. Quo ports US and Canadian numbers only, usually in 3–7 business days. Aircall says UK ports can take up to 6 weeks after your documents are checked.
Set it up in an afternoon
- Decide when it answers. It can take every call, only calls you miss, or only out-of-hours calls. Most trades start with calls they miss.
- Write down what to collect: the caller’s name, a callback number, the address or postcode, what the job is, how urgent it is, and how they found you.
- Define an emergency. Burst pipe? No heating in winter? Decide what gets put through to your mobile straight away and what can wait for a call back.
- Say what it can and can’t promise. Give it your call-out fee if you’re happy for callers to hear it. Don’t let it quote job prices you haven’t set.
- Connect your calendar or job app. If your job app isn’t on the service’s list of integrations, it usually connects through Zapier. That works, but it’s one more thing to keep running.
- Test it properly. Call it from another phone as a normal customer, as an emergency, as someone who hangs up straight away, and outside your working hours.
- Read every summary for two weeks. Fix the script wherever it got something wrong.
Things that catch people out
- Allowances and overage. Plans count calls, minutes or “conversations”, and charges climb once you pass the allowance. Smith.ai’s free AI plan covers 25 calls, then charges $3 per call. Check what counts: Upfirst and Quo’s Sona don’t charge for very short calls, and Jobber doesn’t count spam.
- “Integrates with Jobber” can mean different things. Quo has a native Jobber integration, and Smith.ai’s human receptionists connect directly to ServiceTitan and Housecall Pro. Several AI receptionists only connect to job apps through Zapier.
- US-only services. Goodcall says it’s US-only, and Quo only offers US and Canadian numbers. UK businesses should start with the UK table above.
- Google Local Services Ads (US). Google’s US help page on leads now counts it as a chargeable lead when you miss a call during business hours and the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Trade press reports that this began on 1 October 2026. If you run Local Services Ads, a missed call now costs you the lead fee as well as the job. The UK version of the page doesn’t say this yet.
- Notice periods. Some services need notice to cancel, such as Smith.ai’s 30 days. Check before you sign up.
What we haven’t tested yet
This is a research draft. Every price and feature above comes from the vendors’ own websites and help centres, read on 8 October 2026. The next step is to set up the main options on a real trade line, call them as customers, and report how they actually handle a booking, an emergency and a time-waster. We’ll update this article and the answering calls tools when we have.
Questions people ask
What’s the cheapest way to stop losing missed calls?
Start with what your phone already does: Live Voicemail on iPhone or Call Screen and Take a Message on Pixel, both free. In the US, the next step is a business number that automatically texts back anyone whose call you miss. Quo does this from $19 per user a month. In the UK, Reception Genie’s AI answering starts at £8.99 a month for about 20 minutes of calls.
Can I keep my existing mobile number?
Yes. Most services work with conditional call forwarding: your phone rings first, and if you don’t answer, the call moves to the answering service. You set it up with a short code from your carrier, like *71 on Verizon or **61* on Vodafone UK. Porting your number to a new provider is also possible, but it takes longer and isn’t needed to get started.
How much does an AI receptionist cost?
From the prices we checked on 8 October 2026: in the US, Upfirst starts at $24.95 a month for 30 calls, Rosie at $49 for 250 minutes, and Quo’s Sona AI at $25 for 40 calls on top of a Quo plan (from $19 per user). Smith.ai’s AI costs $150 for 75 calls. In the UK, Reception Genie starts at £8.99 a month for about 20 minutes, and Supportive AI at £69 for 40 calls. Most charge extra per call or per minute once you go over the allowance.
Should I use a person or an AI?
A person costs more: in the US, $250 for 50 minutes with Ruby or $300 for 30 calls with Smith.ai. In the UK it’s £45 for 25 minutes with AnswerConnect. A person is worth it when each job is big and callers expect a human, like emergency or high-value work. For routine enquiries and bookings, AI answering costs a fraction of that, and you can hand difficult calls to a person.
Do these services work in the UK?
Some do. Quo, Goodcall and Rosie are US-focused, and Quo only offers US and Canadian numbers. Jobber’s AI receptionist, Aircall, Moneypenny and AnswerConnect UK all serve UK businesses, as do UK AI services such as Supportive AI and Reception Genie. Check the UK table in this article.
